Feeling Parisian

“When they die, Wilde wrote, all good Americans go to Paris. Some of us have always tried to get there early and beat the crowds.” That’s what I read from Paris to the Moon by Adam Gopnick in my trip to Paris last fall. Amongst all the cities I travelled, I like the incredibly good weather of Los Angeles; I adore the vibrancy and excitement of New York; I enjoy the heavenly vacation in Phuket; but Paris… I fall in love with how beautiful and genuine Paris is.

It was interesting that I just met a new French friend today, talking about Paris. A lot of us expect too much from this city – supposedly dreamy, beautiful and full of love. The fantasy of couture, palace, art, food, and stylish Parisians is completely crashed when reality hits with dirty metro, (some but not all) snobbish people, and slow and rigid system. But to me, that is why I found it beautiful. It is like life itself that is mixed with macaroons and sh*t. It feels genuine and simply so beautifully real to me. And I like it this way. Just like what Gopnick says in the book, “Paris, on the other hand, looked exactly as it was supposed to look. It wore its heart on its sleeve, and the strange thing was that the heart it wore so openly was in other ways so closed – mysterious, uninviting.”

Despite not living in Paris at the moment, I found a small getaway like Paris in town. The photoshoot was taken place at the French restaurant, Libertine, in Central Soho, Hong Kong. With tones of restaurants in Hong Kong, this is one of the restaurants that I revisit from time to time. I do think they have the best beef bourguignon in my world. It was funny that my friend, Yuki, and I were in search of the best beef bourguignon in Paris last fall. We eventually had a moment reaching to our limit, “I am so done with any beef.”

So, I hope you enjoy my little post this week and put down some of my favorite items related to Paris down there from restaurant to books and outfits. And I like to end the article with this quote from A Moveable Feast by Hemmingway about Paris,

“In a city like Paris where there was a way of living well and working, no matter how poor you were, was like having a great treasure given to you.”

I post my column here and www.randomartzine.com and www.shopdescreateurs.wordpress.com every Wednesday. If you like what you see, make sure you give a LIKE at my page at www.facebook.com/carmenchanjewelry
