CARMEN CHAN STYLE LAB: NEW POST EVERY WEEK

Written by CARMEN CHAN | Photographed by AKIF HAKAN CELEBI

I have nothing but gratitude to lead a talented team of emerging fashion talents in Hong Kong recently at the project #ILiveFashion. When people asked why I am spending effort on this, it just comes so natural that I feel an urge to do something as part of this amazingly talented and interesting community. And most importantly, through the project, we want to inspire people to not be afraid to stand out from the crowd and define your own sense of identity, beauty and existence.  That’s what I say, “If fashion is a fantasy, living fashion is living in our own fantastical reality.” Project “I LIVE FASHION” shows the world a non-mainstream voice and new perspective of fashion.

CARMEN CHAN STYLE LAB: NEW POST EVERY WEEK

Written by CARMEN CHAN | Collaboration with Isabel Boren of Shoebox Living

I always enjoy being in the process of craftsmanship. Starting something from the scratch and making it personal feels like getting bits and pieces of yourself back together again. Starting from this month, I will collaborate with Isabel Boren, a lovely old friend back from college and Swedish lifestyle blogger of Shoebox Living , to introduce a new monthly session named “Blondie & Pixie DIY Experiment”.

CARMEN CHAN STYLE LAB: NEW POST EVERY WEEK

Written by CARMEN CHAN | Photographs by JOYCE YUNG

Every girl has her girly moment. Admit it or not, a girl is a girl. We have fantasy and a little bit of drama; we love small details and romance; we are sensitive and sometimes emotional; and oh my favorite – “you think way too much.” But then it is all these traits to make a girl different. Maybe like what Marilyn Monroe, “I'm selfish, impatient, and a little insecure. I make mistakes, I'm out of control, and at times hard to handle. But if you can't handle me at my worst, then you sure as hell don't deserve me at my best.” In this new era, a woman is expected to be independent yet feminine, smart yet soft, strong yet unthreatening. How could we even survive in this planet?

CARMEN CHAN STYLE LAB: NEW POST EVERY WEDNESDAY

Written by CARMEN CHAN | Photographs by JOYCE YUNG

Aristotle once said, “The aim of art is to represent not the outward appearance of things, but their inward significance, and this, and not the external manner and detail, is true reality.” while Karl Lagerfeld said, “Fashion is a language that creates itself in clothes to interpret reality.” If this is the case, is fashion and art a contradicting concept? Or fashion is a way to demonstrate art? When some of us complained the mainstream fashion becomes too commercial and non-arty, does that mean commercial fashion can’t be art? Then what makes Andy Warhol’s work one of the best contemporary arts? I guess it will be an endless question loop.

Florent Petitfrere: Journey from a model to a fashion photographer

CARMEN CHAN STYLE LAB: NEW POST EVERY WEDNESDAY
Written by CARMEN CHAN

A picture is worth a thousand words. This probably means more to Florent Petitfrere than most of us. I met this upcoming french photographer a while ago in Hong Kong through a friend’s introduction. It comes to probably most of us to pop the question when firstly meeting Petitfrere, “Were you a model?”. Yet, behind the charming appearance, Petitfrere shows us all his true passion and profession in photography through his own eye of art and experience in life. It was a long way to journey from in-front-of-the-camera to behind-the-camera. A picture, for Petitfrere, is worth definitely more than a thousand words – it is his whole world.

CARMEN CHAN STYLE LAB: NEW POST EVERY WEDNESDAY

Written by CARMEN CHAN

In the past two months, I closely worked with the talented photographer, Joyce Yung of Random Art Workshop on this editorial’s style outfit posts. When I met her early this year in handbag designer Jennifer Mak’s launch party - despite the fact that we all deny or resist not judging someone by first encounter, first impressions are the most lasting - to me, she is a sincere person. When I get to know her better as a friend, Joyce is a kind, caring and cheerful person with a young heart. Curiosity and her down-to-earth personality guide her to be a photographer with own affectionate style which connects with the person who is being portrayed.
